The voice of Moala, the legendary sea monster from Disney’s Aladdin, is in trouble.
After the film earned $2.8 billion in its first weekend at the domestic box office, Moana has already missed its second-highest opening weekend since 2009.
And that’s not the only problem: Moana’s box office performance has also been underwhelming, with the film falling below expectations in its second weekend, which saw $8.4 million less than its first.
According to Deadline, Moala’s latest financial woes were sparked by a $40 million budget cut and a loss of audience share in the weeks leading up to the film’s release.
While Moana had its best first weekend with $8 million, it has since missed its own second-best opening weekend with only $5.8 million.
The film also struggled to crack $50 million in its third weekend, and has struggled to make more than $100 million domestically since its November release.
Despite the financial woes, Moamana will be released in 2018.
